This seems relevant to the recent “skinny girls are a recent depiction of sexy” conversation

Yup, the idea that our current western standard of beauty has been this innate thing isn’t even true going back a few decades, much less all of human history AND all of the different cultures throughout history (and now.)

Hey spaceslut (I feel really awful calling you that, despite the fact that it’s your username, ha). I think you make some very valid points, however, I have to disagree on a few:

secondly, its not common knowledge that ‘it’s a total pain in the ass to get your account back up and running after it’s been hacked’. my account was compromised a couple of years ago, and i had everything sorted within 24 hours, blizzard’s customer support team are the best people in the world. seriously, i’ve had nothing but great experiences with them on multiple occasions. dealing with them is certainly NOT a hassle

While you may have had a good experience with Blizzard’s customer service, a quick dip into #WoW, Reddit, or the forums will tell you that this is not universal. I’m not saying that every encounter with customer service is bad, but I think everyone can agree that it’s better if you can avoid having to contact them in the first place.

and most people who are ‘hacked’ are actually victims of key loggers. people don’t hack accounts because that takes actual effort. if your account has been compromised you probably clicked a link in a fake blizzard email and literally gave the bad guys your password by typing into their fake website. a good percentage of compromised accounts are also people who bought power leveling and ebay’d their characters.

I think this is another myth. I’ve known several guildies who were completely hacked and their characters used for gold farming. These were people with enough common sense to not click on email links (Really, does anyone fall for that anymore?) In my own experience, I got an official email from Blizzard (yes, I double, triple, and quadruple checked) saying that my password had been changed, and if I didn’t request this, then I should log on to battle.net and undo it - which I did immediately. It’s not always idiots and people looking for a quick level who have their accounts compromised.

The overall message here is the same though: getting an authenticator is minimal effort with a huge security payoff. Everyone should have one, because no one is immune to account theft.

I agree with you about the authenticators, and I’ll share my little bit of experience with the customer service and my account getting hacked.

I’ve never once fallen for the keyloggers, I don’t even click on links in official Blizzard emails, I always go directly to battle.net and access my account from there.

That being said, I’ve had my account compromised twice, and legitimately hacked once before i finally ordered my authenticator, and once i got it it hasn’t been hacked since. But the two times my account was disabled by blizzard, the first it took only 24 hours to get it back up, the second time however took 72 freaking hours, where i called and complained multiple times, but still nothing.

The time it was hacked i got it back quickly, changed my user email and password twice a week between the 4 email accounts I use until my authenticator arrived (ordered the physical one cuz at the time i didn’t have a smart phone). Though the hacker didn’t get much done to me, only leveled my level 60 druid I hadn’t played in 4 months to 70 and got me a pretty nice sum of gold (though the ass sold my raegents. >:| ), I can’t imagine what crap he would have done with my 85s who actually HAD gold if i hadn’t been warned by a guildie my toons were logging in on their own while i was at work.

Over all I had a pretty minor experience, but it was enough to be wary of not having an authenticator and from wanting to deal with the Blizz CS department (though the GMs in game are usually pretty good with fixing things, I just hate calling in and waiting 40 min to talk to someone who won’t even fix the damn problem.)

So there’s my 2 cents on the situation.

been at work nonstop the last few days, have barely been able to talk to my friend on WoW, I miss him so incredibly much, and i feel useless cuz I can’t help him deal with the issues he’s struggling with no matter how much i wish i could.

Internet relationships just suck, cuz no matter how much you love your friend, you cant physically be there for them to lean on you or to hold them when they just want to break down and cry.

But now I’m sad and lonely, so I’m just gonna climb into bed and hope that his insomnia lets him sleep tonight and that I can too.

You’re such a good listener tumblr. :’(
